Lecture 3 continued : sociology as a scientific discipline/ conducting sociological. Logical and empirical reality ( we formulate our own ideas and theories about how the world work, all science has logical and empirical ( observable) ,( empirical reality is variables) Operationalization - come up with a way to measure suicide, translate idea in my head to real world . Studying relationships between/among variables ( scientists / doctors study relationship in body etc , sociologists study relationships of human behaviours/patterns and how people interact with one another) Independent and dependent variable ( independent variable = causes , like why do people get married? dependent variable= thing were trying to explain, in this case marriage)different causes for marriage ; love, money, arranged, etc. Measures must be reliable and valid ( measure reality must have consistent and reliable way to measure and valid measurement( measure what your actually trying to measure) consistent and measure what we say were measuring.
