Vast majority of studies focused on men"s work and white manufacturing work this research does not address all workers experience. These approaches are concerned with women and the experiences of non-white workers. Women and non-white workers worked in different settings, different jobs, less skilled jobs, less pay. Race and gender mattered more than scholars had acknowledged. A careful analysis of a work situation written by a knowledgeable observer. Limited to small work groups during a specific period. Strength- gain intimate everyday familiarity of job content and interactions. Weakness only study a limited range of jobs" somewhat subjective. Strength useful when you can"t be a participant. Weaknesses hard to win confidence of workers, workers may be aware of observers influencing behaviour. Asks a uniform set of questions to a systematic sample of repondents. Draw on several perspectives to understand work issues view of supervisors, workers, union leaders, suppliers, customers, etc.
