There are two types of expressions we give: ones we control smiles, laughter, tone of voice, etc, ones we don"t blushing, voice get"s higher, physical ques. Self presentation motives: achieve personal goals ex. Getting a job: we want to present a likable, positive and consistent view of our self to the world. To conform to social norms this makes society possible if everyone was a non-conformist certain societal constitutions would not work. It"s not always all three sometimes only one or another. The type of clothing you"re wearing and why. Metaphor acting a certain way, putting up a front when on stage where you"re performing. Back-stage you"re unwinding and being yourself more or less. A person takes on a certain role, when you see them outside of that role it can be jarring, think of seeing your dentist outside of the dentists. Controls all elements of behaviours and certain expectations: stigma.
