Subsistence economies worked for their basic needs. Men and women"s spheres in capitalism did not move from one society to another. It developed and emerged w/ the interaction b/w capitalism and patriarchy. Prior to this period, these terms weren"t used. You had to move outside of the home in order to survive (i. e. factories, sold labour for a wage) Women weren"t always able/allowed to work (real) and they influenced relationships, gender roles, and gender in society (ideological) Women were unable to work in certain skilled trades. Working class women had to work due to their social and economic situation. Shortage of workers in industrial sectors women were encouraged to work in areas that they were previously excluded from. The emphasis was on production despite the conditions being very dangerous. Women enjoyed doing this and felt capable. There were now more provisions for working mothers (ex. Women were put back in the home when men returned from war.
