Lecture 1: introduction to sociology of deviance wednesday september 13, Deviance: the perceived violation of norms: everything is relative to the situation and one"s beliefs, has to do with one"s perceptions of the act, perception is built within one"s reality. Criminology vs deviance: all crimes are considered deviant, but not all deviance is considered a crime, criminology is therefore a subset of deviance i. e. smoking is deviant but now against the law. Campaign to deviantize smokers but should deviantize smoking (this is how people are othered) Norms: formal and informal rules of conduct for membership in a group. Folkways: informal rules for acceptable behaviour within a group: etiquette, manners, civil conduct, grooming, verbal/ nonverbal behaviour. Mores: formal rules for conduct within a group: usually codified, i. e. criminal code, by-laws. Conformity: to do what the majority of people are doing to be an accepted member of the group: most people conform most of the time.
