Document Summary

The systemaic study of human behaviour in social context. Social causes are disinct from emoional and physical causes. Allows us to see and understand through a new perspecive. For example, suicide is seen as a private and personal issue, but it is not because people are inluenced by social forces. Durkheim: argued that suicide rates vary because of diferences in the degree of social solidarity in diferent groups: the degree to which group members share beliefs and values and the intensity and frequency of their interacions. As the level of social solidarity increases, suicide rates decline. Altruisic suicide (altruisic means devoion to the interest of others: occurs when norms ightly govern behaviour so that individual acions are oten in the group"s interest. Eg: when soldiers knowingly give up their lives to protect others in their unit. Egoisic suicide: results from lack of integraion of the individual into society because of weak social ies to others.
