Azar gat, the return of authoritarian great powers , foreign affairs (july/august 2007) Azar gat means capitalist nations with a global influence and power ruled by an authoritarian. In the past it did but not longer. Francis fukuyama, if you recall, wrote that the end of history would feature capitalism paired with liberal democracy. Gat, however, argues that there is nothing inevitable about liberal democracy"s ultimate victory or future dominance (p. 60). No, they have too many internal issues and their citizens increasingly seek to live a western way of life despite the costs and the more they are sheltered from it the more they will want to leave. Their path to modernity is much harder on their people and relies on the extortion of some to reap the rewards. According to gat, democratic regimes show no greater tendency to stick together than other types of regimes (p. 61).
