Sapir-whorf hypothesis: language shapes reality, if we don"t have a name for something then we cannot describe it. Lecture 4: names, adjectives to describe males and females. Men tend to be more assertive when they talk. Folkways- informal: people look down but don"t necessarily. Mores- formal: something important to us has been violated a formal sanction. Incest (definition is different: physical reaction of disgust. Perspective norms- things we want people to do: what we would teach children to do because its what we would want of people. Prospective norms- things we do not want people to do. The role of non-verbal communication: eye contact, body movements. We are not as consistent with our values as we think we are. You have to acknowledge the weaknesses in stats b/c some data may be left out if no or a refused response is given. Equality and fairness in a democratic society. Consultation and dialogue: being included in conversations, democratic, voices heard.
