The prolongation of the youth period is fine only if it is justified. Manifest functions are the intended functions of something, in this case school. Most manifest functions are fulfilled but not as much as people except. Proposes that if we move into modernity, institutions begin to differentiate (i. e. universal primary school, to secondary school, to university) 60-70% of the population in canada go on to post-secondary institutions. Skills and knowledge are a type of resource that creates economic activity in growth. When this is applied, the situation isn"t as simple. Argue that social reproduction (social classes are reproducing themselves through the education system) and indoctrination (brainwashing among the lower class) Mass education"s latent functions are in the interest of the elite. Sponsored (parents pay for school or get you into the university that they went to) vs. contest (everyone starts at the same level and has equal opportunities all the way through)
