Why study theoretical perspectives on technology: no single approach adequately describes the complex interrelationships between technology and society, rather, divergent perspectives each shed light on different aspects of technological society. Some of the early theoretical perspective represent rather simplistic views of this intersection, while the more recent shed greater light on the relationship between technology and society. For street (1992) technology "threatens established ways of life" and is thus seen as a regressive force. Luddites countered changes occurring in working conditions as the result of mechanization: hence the term luddite was assigned to those individuals who resist technological developments. Facebook "off the grid: rules included things like, no social media/phones. Internet can be accessed for 1 hr/day, but only at library. Sees factors in society as creating specific uses of technology. Instrumentalism: analyzes technology as a neutral tool or instrument, whose purpose is to fulfill user"s specific tasks. 50 shades of grey: ad for fifty shades is abuse.
