Soc of minorities 2143 october 4th 2012. Cannot deny that social inequality exists, difference exists when we ask how social inequality comes about. We cannot have a society where we"re all at the top or bottom: education system is sorting mechanism for this. We don"t see our society as perfect, but we see it as better than others. We nurture an ideology that we"re all middle class". We see class" as an ugly word a marxist" term. Myth = we live in a socially mobile" society. Class is a measure of autonomy, control and freedom in society; not monetary. Private property = income generating property: land, factories & machinery. We have a structure of privilege: upper class: comprising of super rich, political allies, capitalists. Peter newman considers this the canadian establishment". 1-3% of population own 80% of corporate stocks: extreme lifestyle that we don"t see. Not an individual matter, but rather a group matter.
