Sociology of minorities 2143 october 18th 2012. Heterosexism discriminating against someone because of their sexuality. Ideology and a weapon that we use to keep others down. Homophobia is an integral part of heterosexist. 3 ways to understand minority status of gays/lesbians: heterosexist. The culture, time, environment and understanding that heterosexual is the norm. Heterosexuals have a certain power and legitimacy that others do not have, no need to explain themselves. The programming for heterosexuality begins from infancy. Charge of being gay/lesbian meant to show that they are outside society"s norms. Lesbians have few societal institutions to protect them. Gay men also perceived as a threat to the dominance and control of straight men. Visible gay men are objects of extreme hatred and fear hetero sexual men: economics. Use women as cheap labour (make less money than men) Racism/sexism are strong weapons of cheap labour. Sexism pays when we confine women to the household as the biological producers.
