The experience of disability, chronic pain, and chronic illness. The ways in which we think about health and illness may be changing in at least three ways. New health consciousness: more than wishing to avoid illness, our socieies become preoccupied with achieving beter health. Healthicizaion (conrad: there is a moral imperaive to take responsibility for one"s health. In the sick role, one must want to get beter and seek professional help. In the health role, one must recognize threats to health and manage those risks. We develop cynicism towards the experts who advise us how to be healthy. Messages about how to be healthy become more ambiguous or confusing or conlicing. Last week we discussed medicalizaion and the social construcion of medical knowledge. Today: moving into the social construcion of health and illness and the experience of health and illness.
