Work and family life: social roles & health. Describe how employment and working condiions are associated with health outcomes. Understand how marital status and changes in marital status are related to health. Evaluate how work-life balance is related to health in the canadian populaion. Understand how gender, race, and ses inluence work and health outcomes. Social roles regulate how e interact with others and embed us in networks of support and mutual obligaion. Over a lifeime, we will take on new roles (becoming a spouse) and shed unnecessary roles (reirement from the paid workforce) In this chapter, we will examine how health is related to roles associated with work and family life. Stress process: health-related consequences of transiions in and out of work and family roles that are experienced as stressful, health efects of role strain- problems individuals experience within their major social roles as workers and family members.
