Why is weber different than others that we have studied in. He rejected nominalism and realism, and called for a compromise b/w the two extremes. Weber believed that the unit of analysis for the sociologists should not be the abstraction. Society (reification) but the action of social individuals. Did not believe that we are moving toward perfectibility (unlike marx) and he did not believe that there was a society where equilibrium existed. Weber"s definition of society: is the network of social relationships created by individuals who believe themselves to be meaningfully orientated. He rejected the hegelian and marxist view of the conscious self who yearns to be reintegrated into a society that negates all alienation. Weber"s dilemma between ethic of success and responsibility. He believed that the modern individual was caught between an ethic of success and an ethic of responsibility.
