Document Summary

Anton - the practice of reading good books. 2 parts of article; first addresses contemporary sources of reading atrophy. Second offers arguments for why the practice of reading difficult books is worth the effort. Atrophy -- gradual decline in effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect. Quick glances, getting information quickly and easily, familiar words and syntax. This is the type of reading we think all reading should be. Takes time, unknown words, unfamiliar sentences, etc. We avoid this reading, often say we don"t understand it. Text argues that university professors even give into this and don"t test based on readings because students say they don"t understand the readings. It is more socially acceptable to be incompetent than to be lazy. Society holds people responsible for being lazy but not for intellectual incompetence because that is genetic and beyond an individual"s control. Read on if they don"t understand and then re read.
