Common sense: not rigorous: thinking sociologically = rigorous could be seen as the discipline that objects common sense. Religion: a first and final cause (the cause of everything), presupposes the existence of god. God is the author of all that is. Not logic, its faith: thinking sociologically= analytical, rigorous, no ultimate (first and final) causes. But you have to be able to demonstrate in real life. History: idiographic the study of the specific: thinking sociologically: general nomothetic. Hypothesis: a prediction of a relationship among two or more variables. Law: a reliably verified hypothesis might always be an exception Has to offer an explanation for the observations. Predicts on the basis of the explanation: if the explanation is adequate, it can generate another hypothesis that can lead to more empirical generalizations. Jews commit suicide less than catholics who in turn do it less than protestants.
