Heavily shaped by the ideas of marx and weber, but breaks with both. His risk society became popular more than a decade after it was published; especially since 9/11. Passed away in 2015 at the age of 70. Born in 1938 in england to a middle-class family. Studied sociology and taught at universities throughout britain. Passionately involved in politics; especially england"s labour party. Advisor to tony blair (ex pm); known for creating third way politics. Both beck & giddens are theorists of postmodernity ; worked out these ideas in late 80s and early 90s. Concept of risk does not emerge until the 16th century. Does so in context of portuguese & spanish colonial adventures.
