The study of society and the social groups in society. Relationships and studies of interactions between groups. Systemic study of patterned social interactions in society. Interested in patterns of group behaviour - social structure is patterned social interactions. General in the particular: looks for generalization in a particular part of a social group - looking at particular behaviours but trying to find general patterns within those behaviours. Interested in social deviations: making familiar behaviours strange - unpacking behaviours and questioning what we have always believed and done. Ideology: a lens through which we see the world and view, understand, interpret the social world, comes from your friends, teachers, media, parents, professors. Dominant hegemonic ideology: a lot of people believe something, that canada is a free, multicultural etc country. Liberal democracy: the reason we believe it is the government, the media, pundits, social stratification hierarchy - division of class, race etc. We rank people in society according to class.
