Document Summary

The experience of disability, chronic pain & chronic illness. The world health organization defines disability as a restriction or inability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being, mainly resulting from impairment . This definition adopts a medical model approach: it assumes that disability stems solely from forces within the individual mind or body, rather than from constraints built into the social environment or into social attitudes. A social model of disability emphasizes social forces & public issues rather than individual variation & troubles. Impairment (defined as loss or abnormality of body structure of functioning) does not necessarily mean one is disabled: disability arises when constraints are built into the environment or social attitudes. Minority group: a group, that bc of its cultural or physical characteristics, is considered inferior & subjected to differential & unequal treatment. It is not about the size of the group but the power.
