Sociologists attempt to understand how medical knowledge is applied to behaviors which are not self-evidently medical or biological. Medicalization is the process by which human conditions & problems come to be defined & treated as medical conditions, & thus become the subject of medical study, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment. In the works of irving zola, peter conrad & thomas szasz, ivan illich, ehrenreich , navarro. Labelling human behaviour was not a new phenomenon, medicine was acting as a social control agent as others had before. Much of our critical post-modern thinkers came out of this time. At the beginning of written history, the medical practitioners in the tigris-euphrates & nile valleys were also priests. Illness was regarded as a spiritual problem, a punishment for sins or for violations of the norms of society by such acts as stealing, blaspheming, or drinking from an impure vessel. In egypt, under imhotep, medicine began to receive some separate recognition.
