The ego: the reality principle: balancing act between the id and the superego, let out a little bit of id impulses and superego desires when appropriate. Criminals might have weak egos and superegos which causes them to succumb to their id impulses. Life instinct: eros or libido our self preservation and sex drive. Death instinct: thanatos our instinct towards self destructive behaviour. These 2 forces are in constant con ict with the individual. Deviant behaviour: according to freud, can be blamed on the id, the superego, the ego, or some combination of them. If a strong superego is not developed then behaviour is strange.
