Sociology 2259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Natural Product, Social Control, Child Abuse
Document Summary
Functionalism: dominant paradigm until the 1970"s, emile durkheim, founding father, the view of society: a smooth running machine, deviance: occurs when something in that smooth running machine breaks down. In a functionalist view, rules and rule enforcement are part of the processes that hold the social system together. Was viewed as a natural product of the social order and symptomatic of a problem that must be corrected. Solution: treatment and rehabilitation: change the person and not the system, the system is ok the way it is. 3 main points of functionalism: consensus, what is good for some is assumed to be good for all, everyone agrees that society is good the way it is. "whose it good for?: equilibrium, society is like a homeostatic, self-maintaining machine. If there is not enough deviance, the system will create more, and if there is too much deviance we have our police or agents of social control to control them.
