Document Summary

Explain deviance as behavior or ideas that are produced in subcultures & are transmitted through learning". Subcultures are groups of people who reject in many ways the influence & norms of the dominant culture. Subcultures often involve values & norms that are deviant from the perspective of the wider culture. Argot: subculture language that is specific to the subculture (insider language that has a purpose), invention of words for a particular group, it is for insiders designed to keep outsiders out. Clothing & body language: biker gear, lgbtq stuff, gang logos. Mutually supporting networks: become more dependent on the group. Stereotyping exaggerates cultural differences & treat whole groups as deviants. In most cases, the stereotypes are poor representations of the real behavior of most members of the group. This can & does impede on the notion of a fair hearing.
