Prior to the enlightenment, deviance was thought of as both casual & supernatural. People understood life & reality (including deviance) in terms of myths, parables. Lot"s wife: turned into a pillar of salt. They explained experiences & often were created to help people conform in terms of social control, regulation & the consequences of non-conformity. World view before was through spirituality & now it"s through science. Many stories during this time were geared to children. Teaching children about the consequences of deviant behavior.
