Document Summary

Subculture and learning theories have taken inluence from robert merton and strain theory. They explain deviance as behaviour or ideas that are produced in subcultures and are transmited through learning : deviant behaviour is not biological or about sick individuals/communiies it is learned behaviour. Culture = what you need to know to be a member: when you go to another place with a diferent culture, you know instantly that you are an outsider because you don"t understand the customs and norms. Subcultures are groups of people who reject in many ways the inluence and norms of the dominant culture: subcultures co-exist within mainstream culture, dominant culture has the power over most people to impose their norms and values. Stereotyping exaggerates cultural diferences and treat whole groups as deviants. In most cases, the stereotypes are poor representaions of the real behaviour of most members of the group.
