(know what is covered in class. ) There are some who will believe their doctor and not quesion or challenge it. Usually we treat something through a medical intervenion (medicaion, Formal social control is in the hands of experts surgery: they have the power to: Make it go away eg. giving you a clean bill of health, geing a pardon from a criminal record, changing a category of deviance (such as taking something out of the dsm) Unlike informal social control which controls idenity, formal social control can physically control the body of the deviant: remove the body from the social seing, conine the body to a hospital, prison or asylum ( total insituion ) Moral entrepreneurs: those who crusade for creaion and enforcement of the rules, coined by howard becker in his occupaional model in sociology.
