Law and social control: our laws are used as a tool or mechanism for social control, behaviours can be controlled in society through punitive social control measures. Specific: punishment is specifically for the offender, to deter that specific offender, deterrence is effective - to some extent, ex. One of the main reasons i would never want to commit a crime is because of fear of going to jail however, in some societies where people are raised around crime, deterrence isn"t as effective. Instrumental offences: people want to minimize their losses and maximize their gains, crimes that have lots of planning follow this, ex.
