How people interpret and de ne their social reality and the meanings they attach interactions. 3 basic themes: people act toward objects in their lives according to the meanings of those objects to them. Ie. cross will mean di erent things to someone who is christian or catholic then someone who is not the meanings of objects to individuals emerge from interactions with other people. Ie. you can grow up in a super religious family and then not be religious later in life so the meaning in symbols can change for you. 3. these meanings are applied and modi ed as individuals interpret particular situations. They don"t care about the act, they care about the label that others attach to the act. Who applied the label? someone who is in a position of authority. Tagging - someone attaches a tag to you (thief, rapist) and it is virtually impossible to remove it.
