Criminology has almost nothing to say of interest or importance about women (heidensohn) Conservative feminism: characterized by biological determinism, women as naturally inferior which explains criminality. Liberal feminism: moderate, gradual change in the balance of economic, political and social power, shift from biology to culture, women and men are subject to different opportunities, both legitimate and criminal. Marxist/socialist feminism: patriarchy and capitalism to blame for women"s oppression, solution revolutions, or evolution to socialism, pat carlen, women offenders are disproportionately experiencing poverty/class inequality/racial disadvantage, gender and patriarchy are not sufficient. Women offend at a much lower rate than men. Across all crime: 76. 1% of offenders were male, 3. 2:1 male to female offender, 1/3 of men have a criminal conviction by age of 35, 8% of women have. Women tend to be convicted of less serious offences. Explanations for the gender gap": biological (conservative, masked crime, control (liberal, gender & strain, chivalry.
