Public perceptions of white-collar crimes tend to be more conflicted and confused than are perceptions of conventional forms of crime. Not traditional focus of law or cjs (canada only has fraud over 5k, or fraud under 5k) Individuals who commit wcc enjoy a high level of trust and respect: given credit for introducing the term white collar crime in literature. Ross: sutherland alluded to crime in the upper/white-collar class, composed of respectable or at least respected business and professional men . Criminologists studying wcc generally agree: occurs in a legitimate occupational context. It is motivated by economic gain or occupational success. It is not characterized by direct, intentional violence. Categories of wcc: wheeler and rothman (1982) Individuals offenders: occupational offenders, organizational offenders where both occupation and corporation/organization. Occupational crime: unprofessional conduct and malpractice, 2 issues, misconduct, failure of organizations to deal with misconduct, often invisible as it is hidden by professional associations (catholic church and sexual abuse)
