Single mothers experience longer work hours, financial stress, and social isolation (effects parenting) Broken homes and delinquency: by wells and rankin conducted a meta-analysis and found the relationship b/w broken homes and delinquency. Is weak: has demonstrated consistently for 50+ years, negative effects are greater for boys than girls. Most important aspects of family structure are the parent-child relationship, parenting skills, conflict within the home. Parenting style: baumrind: parental responsiveness extent to which parents are supportive of their children"s needs, parental demandingness extent to which parents are demanding of appropriate behaviour from their children. Baumrind claims there are 4 types of parenting style: authoritative sets realistic standards and expectations, authoritarian harsh punishments over uncontrollable ones. Indulgent doesn"t like punishment, want children to see them as friend. Indifferent -- not emotionally invested, neglectful, just don"t care .
