Introduction to the course, the twentieth century, and power. Intro to the 20th: three thematic elements of the paradigm: Emphasis on reason - basis for empiricism, science, universalism, secularism. Concern for human agency and anthropocentrism - basis for progress, individualism, toleration, freedom. Intersection of the two - uniformity of human nature, progress: enlightenment paradigm interacts and intersects with social world, developing modern social formation in variety of ways, theorists engaged with enlightenment paradigm in variety of ways: Marx - begins with commitment to enlightenment, uses it to evaluate development of capitalism. Weber - attempts to development enlightenment informed version of sociology, analyze how enlightenment failed to be achieved. Ii. b: key themes of the 20th century: Tensions within, between sectors of the modern social formation and their impacts on the social. Changing relations between the west and the rest: tensions within, between sectors of the modern social formation: 19th century: relatively harmonious development of sectors with one another.
