Sociology 2271A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: George Herbert Mead, Symbolic Interactionism, Structural Functionalism
Document Summary
Class notes: on thursday we start with mead. It came about as an established paradigm in 1930s. Classic theorist: george herbert mead: he gave a foundation to symbolic interactionism and became known as the founder, even though it was already created. Modern theorists; cooley, goffman, blumer: there are many more. Different from structural functionalism (which is more macro), because it deals with micro level thought in it"s focus on every day life. Modern theorists came out of the chicago school in the 20th century: known for their social psychology paradigms and looking at the mind and individual motives and how it imprints our identities. Seeks to understand things from the individual point of view, first hand methodology. Sociologists should observe people, rather than think abstractly: ask questions to determine motivation to get their interpretation, or observe through participant observation of every day events.
