Document Summary
Analysis discerning what the data says. Researchers start with analysis and then move back and forth b/w analysis and interpretation. Qualitative data analysis = the process of turning your observations into intelligible accounts . Interviews = transcripts: photovoice = photo and narrative, focus groups = transcript, video. Includes any info that might help you understand your data (preliminary ideas, connections, references to sources, info on respondents, links to interview/line) Read the transcripts: multiple readings are essential, first for accuracy (does it accurately capture the interview, next readings are used for descriptive coding, the following readings are more analytical. Coding different approaches: open coding, completely inductive, read through your transcripts and assign whatever codes come to mind. Coding things to consider: first round of coding should focus on what is there, what are people telling us, also focus on what our data is not telling us (there may be patterns to the silences)
