Eyepatch, parrot, big hat, peg leg, being on ships. A lot of people don"t really have an idea. Organized in a hierarchy: actual pirate gets the most and everyone else gets a lower amount of loot. There were rules: secrecy, hold certain respect for certain people, only do something for you if they are getting some, still in existence today. Governments use them to control certain parts of the ocean, and certain trade routes: key: acquiring territory. Captain blood, the sea hawk, hook, or cutthroat island some classic features of crime. In most organized crimes there is an exchange. In pirating they take from others and don"t give anything back - they just take: unless there is some exchange with the state. Pirates did not confine activities to ships on the high seas. Did not carry out all their crime on ships. Pirates were used so frequently because most things were traded over water.
