Family ties in old age are the culmination of a lifetime of decisions made, roads taken and not taken, and changing times and social worlds (p. 3) . Human agency (decisions made re. eg. partnering & parenting) in context of : structured social relations (variable social circumstances) Focus on late-life families or family relationships in later life: family relationships in later life, always changing. Continuity and change: whose in the network, what the relationship is like, continuity siblings, but change in how often you may see each other. Myths about the past: golden isle myth really great to be an old person ex. Japan: things have gotten worse for older people. Assessing (judging) family ties: change may or may not = decline, multiple vantage points within family. Family structure includes: size, composition, number of generations, vertical dimension old to young, size of each generation, horizontal dimension.
