This was a chance to start fresh. It was facilitated by what is known as the great migration. This was the mass movement of african americans from rural southern states to northern urban cities: there was a chance for new opportunities. African americans were trying to distance themselves from the events that had occurred in the previous centuries. Not all artists agreed on the best way to uplift the race. Created a labour shortage in the urban cities in the north: this gave african americans in the south the ability to move to the north to work in factories.
