Word heterosexual didn"t exist until 1869, invented by a hungarian journalist. Purpose: to describe 2 equal but diff forms of sexual attraction to match new ideas anout human sexuality that were being solidified by the medical, psychiatric and legal bodies of the period. Mcintosh-lesbians were diff from heterosexual women bc they occupied diff roles. Majority of these were gender roles (ex: stereotype of acting mannish) In the past, behaviours that were illegal are: adultery, masturbation, sodomy (can be homo or hetero: oral sex, was illegal, anal, sex w animals). In mid to late 19th century, was thought that only certain types of ppl would do these things. If someone was identified as gay, everything about him was effected by him being gay etc way he walks, talks, profession, etc. Victorian period is in the 19th century (1800-1899)
