Women's Studies 2161A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Caitlyn Jenner, Trans Woman, Pangender
Document Summary
Language is being developed now more, and the stigma is lifting for transgender folk to identify themselves. Not more trans people than there were before, just language is now available to make them evident. It is also now more okay than it ever has been to identify. "moves away from the gender they were assigned at birth, people who cross over the boundaries constructed by their culture to define and contain that gender" "denotes a range of gender experiences, subjectivities and presentations that fall across between or beyond stable categories of man and woman" Allows more people to see themselves in the definition. Fill some space not yet clearly defined: properly belong to another gender. Very individualized and experiential to each person. Historically used when surgical modifications were performed. Contested now because it too closely links biological sex and gender. Often older people prefer and most identify with it (likely because it was the language available a while ago)
