Women's Studies 2161A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Celebrity Culture, Banksy, Pearl White
Document Summary
Lecture 1: gender, celebrity, diversity, and pop culture. Contemporary celebrity culture: ascribed celebrity: fame is a result of inheritance, achieved celebrity: derived from accomplishments in open competition, attributed celebrity: people who are famous for being famous, also could argue a humanitarian celebrity category. Technologies of celebrity culture: saturated with celebrity culture from social media everywhere we go, tv, internet, photography and paparazzi, photoshop, star systems, etc, stars feel accessible to us through social media. Note: only a small number of people in these films: can capitalize on the fact that actors could be recognized. Two pronged approach: content: see what"s out there being shown, effect: on female consumer upon seeing. Symbolic annihilation of women: cultural production and media representations ignore, exclude, marginalise or trivialise women and their interests, represented as stock characters, housewife, etc. What about behind the scenes: women are 50% of film school students, but only 23% is a part of the directors guild of america.
