Technical definition of goffman: identity gone wrong, characteristic that spoils our identity: stigma and normal are opposite. Where is stigma located? in the person (someone that went to jail, and have stigma of being ex-convict) in observer (people who view ex-convict as less than normal as they have never been) *goffman says its neither of these but in the relationship b/w attribute and audience. Nothing stigma in skin colour (dark), not stigmatized walking around in a place where everyone else has the same skin colour. Categories of stigma: abominations of body: scars, deformities, amputation (can physical see, character defect: being dishonest, unloyal, unfaithful (questions someone morality, tribal stigma: race, religion, national origin. Discreditied vs discreditable: there is something about each of us that would spoil our identity. Stigma: undesired differentness from what has been anticipated.
