All business communication has 3 basic purposes (cf. Aristotelian rhetorical triangle: to inform (explain) [logos] Appeal to logic evidence: to request or persuade (urge action: usual primary goal) [pathos] Appeal to emotions: to build goodwill (make good image) [ethos, messages will invariably have more than one purpose (and likely all will work to build goodwill foster ethos) A goodwill message : presents positive image of writer and organization (ethos, treats reader as a person, not a number (document doesn"t seem generic, addresses specifics, cements good relationship between writer and reader.
