Writing 2530A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Sunset Provision, Avail, Development Hell
Document Summary
Examine how series are distributed internationally and what that means for writers. Commonly referred to in the industry as ip for short: for publishing as well as tv & film industry. A legally complex and contentious area of copyright and contract law that applies to everything writers think and do: anything you think is intellectual property, gets tricky in terms of who has access to what. Generally defined as any invention, product, or concept (an intellectual asset ) stemming from a creative process undertaken by one or more people. Ip assets are double-edged swords: protect writers/creators, but at the same time you have a tremendous responsibility if you"re in a contract to share that ip. Recent rulings in canadian courts protect assets without the need for copyrighting or patenting them: cons: can"t quantify it on a paper with a date/time (i. e. document like the us)
