Document Summary

A world apart: global inequality and its consequences. Nothing would happen, because it is impossible for such things to ever happen. The current system of production and consumption is unsustainable. It"s based on two principles that are impossible to maintain in the long-term, the indiscriminate use of raw materials, and the difficulty that 2/3 of all mankind encounter when trying to gain access to the benefits of progress. The current system of production and consumption, far from leading the way to global development, causes major environmental damage and increases inequality between rich and poor. At least 1 billion people on this planet live in a world apart, which gets worse every day. One of the greatest fallacies we encounter when trying to explain the causes of poverty and environmental damage is putting the blame on overpopulation. Japan, for example, has many more inhabitants per square kilometer than brazil, india, or mexico.
