AN100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Emic And Etic
Document Summary
Anthropology came when people started to travel and meet people of different cultures. No biological basis that people who look different are actually different. Different people of the world have different cultures. Subfields of anthropology: cultural/social anthropology, biological/physical anthropology, linguistic anthropology, archaeology. Practical applications in any of the subfields * Paleoanthropology: find skeletal remains of early primates. Primatology = lemurs, monkeys, apes (humans are almost the same as chimps dna wise) Humans and disease ( a factor of population density) Comparison and development (words in the european languages are overlapping) Language families: tracing back languages and how they"re related now (i. e. dutch, english and german) Look at physical remains (i. e. arrowheads, bones) Archaeology is either pre historic or historical. Called social anthropology in the u. k. , called cultural. Don"t be intrusive, try and assimilate with culture. Where you do your research affects outcome.
