Ethnography: process of discovering and describing a culture based on the insider"s viewpoint", discrete cultures (tribal, separate, independent) are more dif cult to nd today, anthropologists study micro-cultures (subcultures) eg. biker gangs, tattoo shops. Culture shock: state of anxiety that results from an inability to predict the behaviour of others to act appropriately in cross-cultural settings, impediment to anthropological research, must know "cultural cues" for successful research. I need knowledge to make a cultural artifact. Micro-cultures: systems of cultural knowledge characteristic of sub-groups within larger societies, a college frat within the context of a uni and nation: members have special daily routines, jokes, rules and meanings for events. Types of cultural knowledge: explicit culture - that people are consciously aware of and can talk about what people know, implicit culture - unconscious, can be discovered through observation; how we use space: intimate, personal, social, public.
