Lecture 5 - jan 19th 2015. Slavery: general, source of slaves. Through war: sell slaves from conquered lands, a way to make money and to boast about the conquests of world. Number of slaves produced could be very high. In the 50s bc, caesar in gaul produced approx. a million slaves. Through trade: people who were captured by pirates and then sold, if you weren"t important enough for ransom. The island of dilos had a huge slave trade. Through birth: if you were born to a slave woman, you were a slave. Masters would take sexual advantage of their slave women. Masters would encourage the slaves to marry and produce children (bc more slaves) Made incennves for women to have children. Through volunteers: ooen cinzens in nancial crisis, because slaves were provided with sustenance: number of slaves. Romans conquered a lot of socienes, so therefore there were a lot of slaves. Early republic (small # of slaves)
