AR101 Lecture 16: Data Sources
Document Summary
Subsistence: source or means of acquiring minimal resources needed for survival i. e. food, water. Nutrition: nourishment or energy gained from foods consumed = quality of diet. Women did all agricultural work: tilled ground, planted and harvested. Responsible for storage, preparation (i. e. pounded and roasted corn in the ashes) Corn was prepared over 20 different ways. Provide information on: procurement, preparation, storage, food, diet, nutrition. Crusts or burnt remains found on the inside of vessels. Chemical structures of fats, oils and waxes released during cooking soaked into the ceramic. Paleoethnobotanists study macro and micro remains, residues. Mainly preserved through charring: biased samples. Floatation separates light fraction e. g. carbonized seeds, wood, small bone from soil. Provide information on food, diet, nutrition, processing, storage, cooking, wild versus domesticated, seasonality. Phytoliths: rigid microscopic silica bodies in plant tissues (flower, stem, root) Evidence of food, wild versus domesticated, processing. Palynology: recovery of pollen, spores help to reconstruct the environment.
