Document Summary

Pictured beside: courtyard of a house with fragmentary wall painting from 2nd century bce in delos. Houses often had same structural features of public buildings. Types of capitals (tops of columns): doric: most common in domestic architecture, ionic: have a fluted top, corinthian: most elaborate, must have carvings of leaves (often acanthus leaves) Not much known about domestic architecture- much information comes from vase painting and greek comedy. More evidence from hellenistic period: houses typically larger. Gender is reflected in houses: dining room was called the andron ( men"s room ) where respectable wives and daughters would not go. Larger homes sometimes had a gynaikonitis (separate suite for women), but women generally stayed in deeper parts of the house away from visiting male friends.
